Rasmus Thomesøns House

Rasmus Thomesøn's farmhouse was the first building at Glud Museum. In 1911 when Karl Hjarne Hansen bought the farm it was his intention to pull down the farmhouse, but Søren Knudsen made an effort to save the farmhouse.

A meeting was held in the village hall in Glud. At the meeting 12 persons were selected to work for the cause: 8 farmers, 1 teacher, 1 vicar, 1 doctor and 1 tradesman (Søren Knudsen). More meetings were hold, discussions took place and shares of about 800 kroner were sold as well as a promise for some hundred kroner from the landowner Schou at Palsgård. A grant from the municipality, the county and the state were expected. The committee thought that it was too risky, so Søren Knudsen took over. With the support from people in the neighbourhood and contribution from Mogens Frijs, the country council in Vejle and the society for the saving of old buildings Søren Knudsen began to break down the farmhouse.

In November 1911 the farmhouse was reconstructed and during the winter a carpenter restored everything inside. Søren Knudsen got a lot of things for the house and the farmhouse opened for the public on 5 May 1912. In the summer 1912 the landowner Schou, from Palsgård came to see the farmhouse, now named "Glud Musæum" by Søren Kundsen and the landowner gave him 200 kroner. Later the parishes in Glud, Hjarnø and Skjold gathered 300 kroner.

Søren Knudsen still needed a stove for the Kakkelstue. It was not easy to find one, because they were send to recasting when they were worn-out. Finally the great farmer H. Holst, Brandberg near Jelling gave Søren Knudsen a very stylish stove from 1797. He also paid for the transportation.

In the meantime the society of Glud Museum was founded. A Museum cannot exist without a yearly contribution and Søren Knudsen was tired of being self-governing, so he offered the Museum to the society of Glud Museum at reasonably terms. Not until landowner Schou promised to give a contribution the society bought the Museum.
